The destination

About the Avebury Stone Circle

Avebury is a Neolithic henge on the Marlborough Downs, raised between roughly 2850 and 2200 BC and inscribed by UNESCO in 1986 alongside Stonehenge. Its bank and ditch enclose a circle 347 metres across, and inside them stand the largest stone circle in Britain and two smaller ones. Part of a village sits within the earthwork, along with two public roads and a thatched pub. The National Trust cares for it on behalf of English Heritage, and it has no gate, no ticket and no closing time.

History

Six centuries of building, then two centuries of destruction: villagers burned and split the sarsens for building stone from the 1700s, and by 1939 only nine of the outer circle were still standing. Alexander Keiller bought the site with a marmalade fortune and put much of it back up between 1924 and 1939.

The stones

An outer ring of about a hundred unshaped sarsens, two inner circles, the Cove, the Obelisk's marked position and two avenues running out across the downs. The low concrete plinths in the turf are not stones at all: they mark where one used to be, which is the single most useful thing to know here.

Getting there

Seven miles west of Marlborough on the A4361, two hours from London and under an hour from Bath. There is no station in the village. Stagecoach bus 49 runs daily from Swindon and stops at the Red Lion in the middle of the circle, which is as close as public transport gets to any great monument in England.

Do you need a guided tour at all?

Worth settling first, because it changes what you should book.

When the answer is no

If you have a car and you are anywhere in Wiltshire, Bath or Salisbury, drive. Avebury is free to enter and always open, so there is no queue to skip and no ticket to buy. Search for Avebury tickets and you will find almost nothing, because there is nothing to sell. Park for £8, walk in, and put the difference toward the museum.

When the answer is yes

From London it is two hours each way with no direct train, and that is the problem a guided day solves. Avebury guided tours also add the second monument: Stonehenge is seventeen miles off, ticketed and timed, and three of these days pay that admission for you. So Avebury tours and tickets comes down to two separate things — the free circle, and the Stonehenge ticket somebody else has bought.

A Stonehenge and Avebury tour from London is the usual shape. An Avebury and Stonehenge tour from Bath or Salisbury is shorter and cheaper.

Nothing to walk into the stone circle. The National Trust car park is £8 for the day or £5 after 3pm, free to members and Blue Badge holders. The Alexander Keiller Museum is £7 and Avebury Manor £14. That is the whole of it: there is no admission charge for the henge, in any season, on any day.

How do I get there?

Seven miles west of Marlborough on the A4361, two hours from London by road and under an hour from Bath. There is no station in the village: Swindon is the useful one at twelve miles, with Stagecoach bus 49 running daily to the Red Lion in the middle of the circle. Pewsey is nearer and has no bus at all.

How long do I need?

An hour walks half the circle. Half a day covers all four quadrants, the museum and lunch. A full day adds West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill, which is the visit most people wish they had planned. The guided days give you between thirty minutes and four hours at the stones, and that number is worth checking before the price.

What is the weather like?

The henge is open chalk downland with no shelter anywhere inside it, and it is open dawn to dusk rather than to a timetable. That means December gives you under eight hours of daylight and June over sixteen. Take shoes for wet grass in any month and one more layer than the forecast suggests.

Do you need a ticket to walk into the stone circle?

No. The stone circle is free and open in daylight hours, with no gate, no booth and no booking. What you pay for at Avebury is the car park, the museum and the manor.

What are Avebury ticket prices in 2026?

There is no charge for the stone circle itself. The National Trust car park is £8 a day, the Alexander Keiller Museum is £7 for an adult and Avebury Manor and garden is £14. Those are the three prices to plan around.

Is Stonehenge included in a guided day?

An hour walks one half of the circle at a steady pace. Half a day covers all four quadrants, the museum and lunch. A full day adds Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow, which is the visit most people wish they had made.

How do you get there from London?

Roughly two hours by road each way. The guided days leave central London between 7:30am and 9:30am and return the same evening. There is no direct train, which is why almost everyone from London goes by coach or car.

Can you get there by public transport?

Yes. Stagecoach West bus 49 runs daily between Swindon, Avebury and Devizes, stopping at the Red Lion in the middle of the village. Bus 42 from Marlborough runs Monday to Saturday with no Sunday service.

How far is the stone circle from Bath?

Under an hour by road, which is why the Bath departures are the shortest guided days. That leaves more of the day for the stones and less of it on the motorway.

Can you walk among the stones?

Yes, and it is the reason to come. There are no ropes and no marked route, so you can walk up to the sarsens and put a hand on them. That is not possible on a standard Stonehenge ticket.

Is Avebury bigger than Stonehenge?

Considerably. The henge is about 347 metres across and its outer circle held roughly a hundred stones, against Stonehenge's thirty or so uprights. Part of a village stands inside it, which gives you the scale straight away.

Are Avebury tours worth it if the site is free?

The fare buys the driving, the guide and almost always a second monument in the same day. Getting to Avebury from London without a car is slow, and most days pair the circle with Stonehenge, Bath or the Cotswolds. If you are already in Wiltshire with a car, going independently is the honest answer.

What is included in a guided tour?

Transport and a guide on every one of them. Three include the Stonehenge admission ticket and one includes Avebury parking. Lunch is excluded on almost all of them.

Can I cancel an Avebury booking?

Most of the guided days refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Two are final sales that cannot be refunded or changed, and both say so on their own card. Check the line under the price before you pay.

Do I need an Avebury reservation in advance?

Not to stand in the stone circle, which needs nothing at all. For a guided day, yes, especially between June and September when the small-group departures fill first.

Which tour gives the most time at the stones?

The Glastonbury departure, at four hours inside the circle. After that come the two-hour stays on the London coach day, the evening special-access day and the private Sacred Sites route.
